Praise for HTH
I love this newspaper. I so appreciate your excellent coverage of the past five-plus years, turbulent as they have been.
I sincerely believe that you are an integral part of this unique community’s survival. How else could we have survived the boisterous national politics amidst local lava flows, followed by an isolating pandemic, without your consistent presence in our green delivery box each morning (Saturday’s now excluded)?
We face a challenging future: More and more people want to move here, while climate change continues to press forward. How will be cope?
I hope the community will continue to support the Hawaii Tribune-Herald as we face our future. How else can we integrate all the changes in front of us while retaining the best of who we are as a community without this community voice? Thank you all.

Summer school
My name is William Lockhart, and I am a junior at Waiakea High School. I am working on my Boy Scout Communication Merit Badge.
Requirement No. 7 says, “Write to the editor of a magazine or your local newspaper to express your opinion or share information on any subject you choose. Send your message by fax, email or regular mail.”
As a student who has participated in distance learning for over a year, the amount of knowledge learned this past year has been significantly lower than in-person learning.
This was likely due to distractions and lack of motivation. Students tend to lose motivation throughout the year when every day is just listening to teachers through a screen.
I found distance learning to be quite easy, and I received good grades. On the other hand, this was because I was not pushed to my limits as a student.
In my opinion, the Department of Education should have enforced summer school on all students in order to improve the students education before moving onto their next grade.
